The authors demonstrate the presence of phosphorylated alpha-synuclein (p-aSyn) in the skin of 5 out of 8 patients with long covid postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). P-aSyn is a biomarker for synucleinopathies and was detected using an immunohistochemical method. 3 of the patients showed reduced intraepidermal nerve fiber density. 4 of them exhibited hyposmia. It is estimated that 67% of individuals with long covid have POTS (https://doi.org/10.3389/fneur.2022.1012668). The findings reported in this case series need to be followed-up to better understand the pathophysiology of long covid and assess the risk of neurodegenerative disease.
